The Geeky Me
Quantum Mechanics.
I attended the third lecture on QM yesterday.
And I just couldnt get it.
(I dont get what's the big hoo-ha about QM for a couple of things i learnt.)
Those that were not shocked when they first come across quantum mechanics cannot possibly have understood it - Niels Bohr
Well, it's sort-of the second time i heard about quantum.
Okay.
1) Compton scattering - shows that light behaves as paes (photons) sometimes.
Since the 'quantum' particle is really really small (
Δx), you need very large amount energy (small
λ) to detect its existence.
It's like your friend, being large, so you only require a little amount of energy to 'move' it. And once it moved, you know he's there! (It exists.)
2) Heisenberg's Uncertainty principle - cannot detect both position and momentum accurately at the same time (Energy and time as well)
The thing is, for a 'quantum' particle, since (
Δx) is small, according to Heisenberg's principle, (
Δp) should be large!
It's like, if you push a person with tremendous amount of energy, then it will move at a vvvv high velocity. So, you know the 'starting' position- where the person is initially- well, but you wont know it's momentum (= mass x velocity).
3) Young's Two-slit experiment - classical particle, classical wave, quantum particle when observed behaves like particles, quantum particle when not observed behaves like wave!
I shall skip the understanding/explanation.
What i dont get is :
Quantum particle when not observed behaves like waves. One electron interferes with itself!
That is, it's as if it passes two slits
AT THE SAME TIME!
IMO, isnt it just like..
You put a person inside a lecture theatre. There's two doors for him to exit.
You are outside the theatre.
So, actually, the person can exists ANYWHERE inside the theatre! (with different probability - it has zero probability to be on the ceiling) However, when you open the door and look, he is at a certain position (with 100% probability)! (just like the collaspe of wavefunction.)
Next, if the person exit, and you look at him come out from the door. He behaves like 'a particle'. That is, you know exactly which door it left.
However, if you dont observe (Really dont observe, no camera etc) He can exit from both door! (or so you will say! CAUSE you just wont know which door he exit from!)
Isnt it just a question of ignorance?!
Or maybe my understanding is not complete yet.
Idk, but if what i think it's true.
I will propose and try to test that electrons are
'alive'!
According to what i learn in Primary 3, living things can move, reproduce?
Maybe electrons cant reproduce, but they can move right!?
We can make a twist to the definition of living things and tada~
Solve the problem?
IDK. just some of my thoughts.
And pardon me IF i have said any physics theory
wrongly (What's 'wrong' can be proven to be right in the future. And what's proven to be right can be proven wrong in the future.) because its the second time i came across QM!
